I'm sitting at my dining room table pondering ideas for a Thanksgiving themed article.

Perhaps the idea of family dynamics and Fatherhood Statistics and how they play a role in the holidays. How this time of year brings thoughts sorrow or loss to some while others embrace ecstatic joy.

I glance to a piece of paper sitting near me, my son's Christmas list.

It's simple. A few toys but nothing extravagant.

Then it hit me. All are wants, not needs.

He does not understand needing.
For the most part, neither do I.

And I'll guess that the majority of the people that will read this article don't either.

I challenge you to be thankful to only want and not need. That you will wake up tomorrow in a warm home with clean water to drink, food to eat, and perhaps someone you love with whom to spend the day.

May we all be so lucky.

Recently, my family went RVing.

One morning, our 6 month old was crying, still in the pack-n-play, while we organized for the day. My wife and I were exhausted from the restless night and the night before. Our 2 year old had an ear ache and was also crying.

Then in the middle of this high anxiety moment, our oldest began to sing.

Standing over the pack-n-play, reaching down rubbing his baby brothers head, in the sweetest little voice, sang Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

Everything stopped.

In that moment, the entire day was re-routed.

His ability to spark joy in places I couldn't image is beyond my comprehension.

Sometimes it's hard to pull back the layers of my weariness to embrace the innocence and joy in some of these moments. They don't always stop us in our tracks or make us smile. But I'm continuing to challenge myself to allow it to.

I think we can all learn something from children in this way.

While experience is an excellent teacher, life has callused our mind and stolen our own innocence.

We can all use a bit of innocent joy in our life. Embrace it.

This is an encouragement to our teachers out there, and a sworn duty as a parent to support you in the care of so many of our nation's children.

In the past two decades our teachers have borne the stress of the mass growth of our nation. Their classrooms are overfilled, they are dealing with regulations changes, a vast diversity of children with different capabilities yet in the same grade. More specialization, vast advances in technological usage. Strain from politics and societal issues.

They were stressed to a breaking point during COVID. Many teachers left the profession due to the challenges of the classroom, the curriculum, and the regulations from every angle of government and medical agencies. Also teachers left due to the challenges with the children they were in charge of.

Even with that said, they felt they could work with the kids no matter the challenges in the classroom. They had an increasing problem with their students' parents.

I send a shot to all dads today. I want to be honest. I hope to speak about what we all feel. Being a father is one of the greatest weights I have ever carried.

In this vein I write today with an honest statement more than encouragement.
I am not going to complain.
This is not a Facebook rant.
I am not going to cry in my lemonade or hop based beverage.

I AM going to publicly state, being a father kicks my butt.

I have loved deeper, I have lived more meaningfully, I have appreciated the gift of life more as a parent than any other time in my existence. I give God continuous thanks for the opportunities I have been given.

BUT….that doesn’t mean I am not stressed to the end of earth during it.

I think a child benefits greatly from a pet. An animal with unconditional love is something we all can appreciate. It is important for a child to bear responsibility for an animal. Having tasks to complete in the daily effort to clean up after them, feed them, take care of them.

These acts teach an outward serving mentality that is important in any walk of life. It is fun to have such a wide variety of pets to choose from. Their lives intertwine with yours and can be part of many memories. Even with their passing, an unfortunate event to be sure, it can teach children about the reality of life and death in a relatable way that still prepares them for the rigors ahead.

I believe it will foster our kids' life experience to grow with a brand new little dog that can become a part of our family.

This week we are bringing home our puppy. Wish us luck gents!
