As a father, it's difficult to pour into your family when you so badly need to be poured into yourself.
Our role is to be providers, protectors, encouragers, problem solvers, care givers, lovers, planners, you name it. There are numerous facets to these titles of our life.
At times it can be overwhelming.
In addition, it's in our nature to not show these feelings of pressure.
We withhold these emotions in order to show strength and resilience to our children.
We don't off load them because we don't want to put anything else on our wife's plate.
We bottle it up because that's the "manly" thing to do.
Well, let me say this. When you are so wound up that you no longer have the capacity to loving and patiently serve your family, you are not being a man.
A man deals with the barriers in his life no matter their form, physical or emotional.
Men, do what you need to do in order to sustainably carry your mental load.
It could be grabbing a drink with a few buddies, going to the gym, or simply sitting on the back porch by yourself every now and then. Whatever it is, find your haven. Your method of rejuvenation. Then, speak to and plan with your wife for this time, explaining it's importance.
To clarify, this is NOT an excuse to dump the kids on her. This is a conscious, planned decision to ensure your are mentally present and able to properly lead your family.
Take time for yourself in order to then be able to better serve your family.

It is vital for us parents to gauge what our children take to. Then, it is important to walk with them on that path and give them every opportunity to succeed in it.
I am a firm believer that if they find their passions in life it will strengthen their self worth. If they have self worth, an identity, they are less apt to be drug down or negatively altered by the world and its trials.
Bolster their dreams any way you can. There is no better legacy than watching your child succeed in doing something they love.

Looking for a way to make the most of this beautiful time of year and spend quality time with your children? One idea is to take them to some yard sales in your area!
It's the perfect opportunity to get some fresh air and enjoy the company of your little ones.
Keep the activity simple or dive into the fun and learning ideas.
No matter how you go about it, this activity will provide you with plenty of quality time with your children. Take advantage of the car rides to and from the yard sales.
Maybe turn it into a day and grab lunch together.
Either way, be present and intentional. Let it be at the fore-front of your mind how many times you look at your phone. If you pull it out to research an item you found, don't get side-tracked and start scrolling or checking email. Make sure you keep the goal in mind, intentional time with your children.
These kind of days with their father are ones that will be remembered. They may not remember the exact conversation or items they bought, but they will remember the time spent together. Make it happen!

I'm writing this today because I had to audibly say these words to myself this morning.
Most of the day was spent outside digging in the dirt, splashing in the water play table, or walking through mud.
It's so easy for me to seclude my boys to the non-muddy part of the yard or to not put water in the play table. I know it will only lead to more work before we head inside to ensure we don't leave a trail all the way to the shower.
However, I'm extremely fortunate to have such an encouraging wife that simply reminds me that everything can be cleaned.
Even if we do bring in mud, the floors can be mopped.
If the boys clothes get wet, they can take them off and hang them out to dry.
If dirt is shoveled into the patio, it can be swept.
Yes, more energy may be exuded at the end of the day, but even more fun will be had. Embrace the moment and enjoy the fun. Heck, go ahead and jump in the mud with them!
What a memory it will make.

"They grow up so fast" as they all say.
This, in no way, can truly be understood until you have a child.
Then, you find yourself constantly saying it.
Ensure you don't end up saying it with regret.
Embrace time with your children today!
Even with infants, find the little moments to slow down and enjoy.
As his daughter slept on his chest, @maxlucado puts it best in his book Dad Time: "She'll never remember this moment and I'll never forget it." (p.11)
